About

Old Market Square, often called Slab Square, is the beating heart of Nottingham. The pedestrianised plaza spans roughly 12,000 square metres and is framed by historic streets such as Long Row, Beastmarket Hill and South Parade. After a £17 million redesign completed in 2007, the square now features a sweeping granite plaza, illuminated fountains and a bold, contemporary water feature that draws visitors year‑round. The square is a hub for community life and cultural events. It hosts the annual Nottingham Goose Fair, a winter Christmas market, and a regular farmers’ market, alongside concerts, parades and city celebrations such as Light Night. The redesign preserved historic elements – notably the two stone lions that guard the steps of City Hall – while adding modern public art and accessible pathways, making it a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike.
