The City Of Caves
About
The City of Caves is Nottingham’s crown jewel, housing the UK’s largest network of underground passageways with over 900 carved tunnels. Visitors can wander through historic tunnels that once sheltered prisoners, served as WWII air‑raid shelters, and included a medieval tannery. The exhibit offers engaging audio guides, interactive displays, and guided tours that unearth the layers of history hidden beneath the city streets. Admission is affordable, with a £11 adult ticket, £9 for ages 5–17, and free entry for children under five. Family passes are available for 2 adults and 2 or 3 children, and a yearly pass grants unlimited access for 12 months. Seminar and educational visits can be booked in advance, and the venue operates daily from 10 AM to 5 PM, closing on major holidays such as Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The Caves are open via steps beside Nottingham Contemporary and can be reached by bus, tram, train or car from the city centre. The venue is cashless, but tickets can be pre‑paid online and brought in as payment. The site is run by the National Justice Museum, a registered charitable partner, and supports educational and community projects through admission proceeds.
