Powis Castle and Garden
About
Powis Castle and Garden nestles in the historic market town of Welshpool, Powys, and is a testament to Welsh heritage. Originally built by a Welsh prince in the 13th century, the stone fortress evolved into a magnificent Baroque country house whose interiors showcase Elizabethan, Jacobean and Edwardian decoration. The surrounding formal gardens – the finest surviving Baroque gardens in Wales – feature broad terraces covered with tall yew trees, a serene water garden, and a charming woodland area that offers a peaceful walk about 30 metres above the Severn Valley. Visitors can browse the Clive Museum, which houses more than 300 South Asian artefacts collected by the 18th‑century East India Company, making Powis a must‑see for history lovers and art collectors alike. A café in the courtyard offers light bites, while a shop answers the longing for local souvenirs. In total, a visit of three hours allows guests to absorb the grandeur of the castle rooms, the lush gardens, and the cultural treasures on display.
