Start Point Lighthouse
About
Start Point Lighthouse, perched on the dramatic cliff of the South Devon coast, stands as a proud beacon since its construction in 1836. Built by engineer James Walker and erected on granite, the 28-meter tower features a distinctive cylindrical shape, balcony, and lantern. Owned and operated by Trinity House, this Grade II listed landmark has been automated since 1993, with its original lens replaced by a modern LED lantern in 2018. The lighthouse’s flashing light—white every ten seconds, red occasionally—has guided vessels for nearly two centuries. The site offers visitors a chance to explore the historic tower, learn about lighthouse technology, and admire panoramic views of the English Channel. Open to the public during the summer months, the Start Point Visitor Centre provides exhibits, a souvenir shop, and a café. Situated on a rugged peninsula that unfurls nearly a mile into the sea, the lighthouse is an iconic spot for photographers, history enthusiasts, and those seeking dramatic coastal scenery.
