HISTORY Hypatia Apartment is situated in The Regent, which dates back more than 400 years and it is one of the oldest buildings in Penzance. It would have been one of the beautiful houses on Lady Street (now Chapel Street), first admired and then destroyed and burned in the Spanish sacking of Penzance in 1595. Subsequently it was rebuilt as a fine residence, to which a new frontage in the Palladian-style was added in the second half of the 18th century on the Chapel Street side of the building. The original frontage of the building had been in Custom House Lane, off Chapel Street, to the right of The Regent, you can still see where the original entrance was which is now a Palladian-style window. Custom House Lane was originally designated as the New Street Slip, running parallel to the Abbey Slip at the next left turning from the apartment by The Admiral Benbow pub. The earliest known owners (1707) were the families of Buller of Devon and Shillingham of Cornwall. It was the Batten family home (merchants in timber and coal) for the majority of the 19th century until it was sold in 1861 to Mr John Coulson, another Penzance merchant and property owner living on the same street. Latterly it became Perrow’s Temperance Hotel and a staging post, before having a large number of commercial and residential uses in the 20th century. LIVING The open plan living area really has the wow factor. It’s a big space with stunning flagstone floors and French doors out to the patio. A huge squidgy sofa, armchair and captain’s chair are perfect for lounging. A large Smart TV with built-in ceiling speakers will keep you entertained.
