Challaborough Beach
About
Challaborough is a picturesque, horseshoe‑shaped beach located on the south coast of Devon, England. Known for its powerful and well‑formed surf, it attracts both local and visiting surfers from Plymouth and beyond. The beach sits within the parish of Ringmore, with part of its eastern bay falling under Bigbury-on‑Sea, offering panoramic views of Burgh Island and the surrounding cliffs. The area is a popular destination for holidaymakers, featuring a mix of static caravan sites—one operated by Parkdean Resorts—and private homes. Facilities on the lower caravan site include a nightclub, arcade, swimming pool, bar, shop, launderette, and a child’s play area, while the upper site offers quieter views and fewer amenities. Challaborough benefits from good accessibility, with disabled beach access well maintained and a public slipway free for all to use, though it is best suited for smaller boats. The beach is fenced off for dogs during the summer months, and RNLI lifeguards patrol most of the year. Beyond surfing, the coastline near Challaborough is rich for diving, with several wrecks nearby, and offers excellent fishing, sailing, and coastal walks along the South West Coastal Path. With its rugged scenery, friendly atmosphere, and ample recreational opportunities, Challaborough is a hidden gem for beach lovers and adventure seekers alike.
