Clouds Hill
About
Clouds Hill, the rustic retreat of famed author and war hero T. E. Lawrence, sits on a gentle rise in the Dorset countryside near Wareham. This Grade II* listed cottage, originally a 19th‑century forester’s dwelling, was transformed by Lawrence into a personal sanctuary complete with his own furniture, a music room, and a motorbike shed. Visitors wander through the preserved rooms—Book Room, Music Room, and the modest but charming kitchen—treasuring the artefacts that illustrate Lawrence’s complex personality and his quiet love of the English countryside. The site offers more than a glimpse into a historic life: the grounds include a small motorbike shed showcasing Lawrence’s prized Brough Superiors, and a hilltop overlook that offers sweeping views of the surrounding heath and the River Frome. A brass‑rubbing station invites guests to try their hand at a traditional craft, while an on‑site guide explains the significance of the Greek inscription above the cottage’s entrance wall. Open from Wednesday to Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Clouds Hill is a peaceful spot for reflection and study. Guided tours, free for National Trust members, allow access to deeper exhibition material, while non‑members may purchase tickets starting at £12.10. The cottage is wheelchair‑accessible via a flat 90‑yard path from the car park, making it a welcoming destination for all visitors.
