About
Lochranza Castle is an iconic L‑plan fortified tower house perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea in Lochranza on Scotland’s Isle of Arran. The main structure was largely built in the 16th century, though the site dates back to the 13th century when a royal hunting lodge was established for kings and nobles such as Robert the Bruce and James IV. Today the castle is cared for by Historic Scotland and offers visitors a tangible glimpse of the island’s medieval heritage and the shifting allegiances that shaped its history. A leisurely walk around the tower’s grounds and the surrounding gardens reveals layers of Scottish history, from its early royal connections to its later status as the home of the Blackwood‑Davidson family.
