About

Pickering Castle stands on the fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors, overlooking the picturesque town of Pickering. This classic 13th‑century motte‑and‑bailey fortress was rebuilt in stone during the 13th and 14th centuries, retaining a high Norman motte, a shell keep, and three substantial curtain‑wall towers. Visitors can climb the motte stairway for sweeping views across the moorland and surrounding countryside. Inside the ruined keep and walls is the chapel exhibition, featuring medieval arrowheads, knives, spurs and manacles, giving insight into the castle’s military past. The site is also a haven for wildlife, with kestrels nesting here and over 45 species of wildflower flourishing on site. Entry to Pickering Castle is free, though the castle is currently closed to the public until March 2026. The English Heritage website will update opening times, and visitors can purchase a £3.50 guidebook or apply for a membership pass via the official site.
