Peak Cavern, famously nicknamed "The Devil's Arse", is a striking natural cave situated beneath Peveril Castle in Castleton, Derbyshire. Its cavernous entrance is the largest natural cave entrance in Britain, creating an awe‑inspiring first impression. The cave's rich history dates back to the rope‑making industry of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the echo of rope‑making whispers still linger in the stone walls. Visitors are guided through a fascinating underground world where they can learn about the techniques used by English lead miners to make rope and witness the tales of Victorian tour guides. The guided tours start on the hour from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM every day, with each walk lasting between 60 and 75 minutes. The cavern is reachable by a short walk from the car park, and while wheelchair access to the entrance is limited, the inaugural chamber is largely flat and level. In addition to the guided tour, Peak Cavern comes to life as a unique venue for concerts and other special events. Regular music events, film screenings and themed nights use the cavern's natural acoustics to create an unforgettable atmosphere. 2025 will feature pop, rock and folk nights, while 2026 will bring winter‑season Christmas carol concerts.
