About

Exbury Gardens is a sprawling 200‑acre horticultural masterpiece situated in the heart of Hampshire’s New Forest, just east of Beaulieu. The estate, acquired by the Rothschild family in 1919, boasts an exceptional collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and the national collection of Nyssa and Oxydendrum. Its formal and woodland gardens are framed by a 12¼‑inch gauge steam railway that winds through tunnels, past ponds, and along the Summer Lane, offering visitors a charming, moving stroll through the garden’s varied landscapes. The gardens feature a range of thematic spaces, including the Hydrangea Walk, the Rock Garden, the Iris Garden, and the Sundial Garden. Seasonal highlights draw crowds each year: the spring burst of rhododendron and azalea blossoms, the summer display of herbaceous borders and hydrangeas, and the autumn colours of maples and azaleas. In addition to scenic pathways, visitors may enjoy the newly refurbished café, the Top Pond – home to koi and goldfish – and an adventure play area designed for children. Exbury’s steam railway, built in 2000–2001, is a popular attraction that often requires double‑headed locomotives. Special events such as ghost trains in October and Santa Steam Specials during the holiday season add extra excitement. Whether you’re a plant enthusiast, a history lover, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Exbury Gardens offers a memorable experience for all ages.
