About
Fort Nelson is a spectacular Victorian fort overlooking Portsmouth Harbour, home to the Royal Armouries ‘National Collection of Artillery’. The site showcases more than 700 pieces of artillery from across the globe, including a 15th‑century Turkish bombard, a 200‑tonne railway howitzer and the infamous ‘Big Babylon’ Iraqi supergun. Visitors can wander through 19 acres of tunnels and ramparts, explore the authentic 19th‑century gunhouses, and experience interactive, family‑friendly activities such as the “Stand‑in‑with‑Giants” remembrance installation. The fort’s outdoor setting, panoramic views and free admission make it a must‑visit for history enthusiasts and families alike.
