SeaCity Museum
About
The SeaCity Museum, opened in 2012 to mark the centenary of the RMS Titanic’s departure from Southampton, is a striking blend of heritage architecture and immersive storytelling. Housed within the historic civic centre—a former magistrates’ court and police station—the museum’s two permanent galleries celebrate the city’s maritime legacy: the "Gateway to the World" explores Southampton’s role as a global port, while the "Titanic Story" brings the tragic saga to life through artifacts, audio recordings, and interactive displays. A third space, a purpose‑built pavilion, hosts temporary exhibitions, most notably the acclaimed Titanic centenary show "Titanic: The Legend". Visitors can also wander the repurposed courtroom, now an intimate exhibition area that echoes the ship’s interior. The museum’s design by Wilkinson Eyre and construction by Kier Southern honours the building’s listed heritage, preserving original features such as former prison cells and a courtroom, while adding a bold, three‑bay pavilion that pays homage to the city’s maritime aspirations. With 2,000 m² of exhibition space, the SeaCity Museum offers a comprehensive narrative of Southampton’s past, its link to the Titanic, and its broader impact on global migration. A centrepiece of the visitor experience is the large, life‑size replica of the RMS Queen Mary that hangs over the Gallery of Migration, complemented by interactive virtual‑ship experiences. Guided tours and multimedia displays enable families, history enthusiasts and solo travelers to engage deeply with the artifacts and stories that shaped the city’s identity for over a century.
