The Mary Rose
About
The Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard brings to life the world‑famous Tudor warship that sank in 1545. After more than 500 years at the bottom of the Solent, the ship was recovered in the 1980s and carefully conserved while the museum was rebuilt in 2013. Today the museum showcases the ship in a purpose‑built underground hall, surrounded by a glass roof that allows visitors to see the hull up close, as well as a collection of more than 19 000 artifacts spanning the Tudor period. The museum offers interactive galleries, a 4D cinema that tells the story of the ship’s discovery and excavation, and the “Hatch the ship’s dog” exhibit which brings the Tudor crew to life for families. A series of guided tours—ranging from one‑hour highlights to the premium two‑hour experience—are available throughout the week, and the museum also hosts educational workshops for schools and community groups. Beyond the ship, visitors can explore conservation laboratories, research facilities, and the museum’s gift shop and café, all housed within the historic HM Naval Base. With opening hours that extend to 5:30 pm from April to October, the Mary Rose Museum remains a top destination for history enthusiasts, families and anyone interested in maritime heritage.
