About
Harecastle Tunnels are operated by The Canal and River Trust, and are situated on the Trent and Mersey Canal in North Staffordshire, near to Burslem and Westport Lake. The first of the two tunnels, now disused, was commenced in 1766 by James Brindley, and completed in 1777. The second, which is still in use today was commenced in 1824 by Thomas Telford, and completed in 1827. Telford's tunnel is still in use for passage under Harecastle Hill.
