South Devon Railway
About
South Devon Railway is the longest established heritage steam railway in the South West, running 10.7 km between Buckfastleigh and Totnes along the dramatic River Dart. The line features authentic GWR steam locomotives, a 1950s restaurant car, and the famed Pullman carriage No. 246 'Lydia'. Visitors can take a slow‑moving paddle across the valley, explore the on‑site museum, stroll riverside or beside gardens, and witness locomotive restoration workshops. Experience the railway in many flavours – the traditional Dining Train offers Ploughman's lunch, Afternoon Tea, Sunday lunch and Christmas specials, all served aboard a restored 1950s car. For a touch of luxury, board Pullman Car 'Lydia' for themed lunches and teas that combine Victorian elegance with modern comfort. Those craving adventure can drive a steam or diesel locomotive on the Gold, Silver or Heritage Diesel Packages, or solve a mystery on the Murder Mystery evening. A unique Freight Train adventure lets visitors ride in a guard's brake van for panoramic countryside views, including open verandas. Ideal for families, history enthusiasts and train lovers, the South Devon Railway invites visitors of all ages to discover Devon's heritage, relish local cuisine and enjoy a day of relaxed travel in a setting that has enchanted passengers for over 50 years.
