Greenhill Gardens
About
Greenhill Gardens is a cherished public garden located in the northeastern suburb of Weymouth, Dorset, England. Housed on sloping land that climbs up from the beach, the gardens offer panoramic views of Weymouth’s seafront and the surrounding bay. The garden was originally part of the Wilton Estate and was gifted to the local council in 1902 for the benefit of Weymouth’s inhabitants. Over the years it has earned Green Flag status, a national recognition for the finest parks and gardens across the UK. Sprawling through the gardens are a mix of bright borders, winding paths, a 18‑hole putting green and four tennis courts. Several charming cafés—including the Greenhill Beach Café and the Seascape Café—provide indoor and outdoor seating. Notable features such as the historic 1936 floral clock, the wind‑blown Schneider Trophy weathervane, the Wishing Well donated by Melcombe Regis Rotary Club and the stone shelter originally erected in 1919 by Mayor V.H. Bennett make the gardens a delight for visitors of all ages. The Friends of Greenhill Gardens, established in 2007, support the garden with annual charity events, plant displays, and a dedicated area for visitors with visual impairments. Together the community ensures the gardens remain welcoming, safe, and well‑maintained for all members of the public.
