About
Whitby Lighthouse, also known as Whitby High Lighthouse, stands proudly on Ling Hill overlooking the east coast of North Yorkshire. Built in 1858 by the renowned engineer James Walker, this white octagonal brick tower rises 13 metres and has been a vital navigational aid for maritime traffic for over a century. In 1992 the lighthouse was automated, ending the era of resident keepers and ensuring continuous operation with modern technology. Today, the site is a Grade II listed landmark, offering visitors panoramic views of Whitby Harbour and historical insight into the evolution of lighthouse design.
