The Firs
About
The Firs is the birthplace of the legendary composer Sir Edward Elgar, set in the picturesque village of Lower Broadheath in Worcestershire. The 19th‑century Victorian cottage, surrounded by a charming garden and overlooking the Malvern Hills, offers a rare glimpse into the life and surroundings that inspired Elgar’s music. Inside the cottage are original furnishings and personal mementos, while the adjacent visitor centre hosts interactive exhibitions, a collection of Elgar’s instruments, photographs, videos and immersive displays that bring his world to life. The cottage garden, a classic example of a cottage garden style, provides a peaceful spot for reflection and a venue for the family friendly Sound Garden, where visitors can sit with a piano and play. The Firs also features a café—Little Al’s—serving coffees, cakes and brunches in a warm, welcoming setting. Visitors can explore the collection of books, CDs and LPs available for purchase, rent out spaces for events, and enjoy group visits with tailored experiences. The site is fully accessible, with wheelchair access to the visitor centre and garden, accessible toilets, and designated parking. During the Christmas season, special Father Christmas events are held, while most of the year the site remains open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with the café open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). Under‑5 visitors enter free, while adult tickets start at £12.10, child tickets at £6.10, and family tickets at £33.30.
