About

Lake Vyrnwy is a dramatic reservoir in Powys, Wales, created between 1881 and 1888 to supply the growing city of Liverpool with clean drinking water. Covering 4.54 km² and plunging to a depth of 26 m, the lake is surrounded by the Lake Vyrnwy Nature Reserve, managed jointly by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Hafren Dyfrdwy, and is a favourite spot for birdwatchers, walkers, cyclists and families. The Grade I listed stone dam—featuring 31 arches and two distinctive towers—offers panoramic views of the water and the surrounding moorland, while a nearby sculpture park showcases wooden art works sculpted by local artisans. Visitors are free to explore the scenic walking trails, the RSPB bird‑hide hideouts, and the historic dam throughout the year, making Lake Vyrnwy a must‑visit destination for lovers of nature and history alike.
