National White Water Centre
About
Canolfan Tryweryn is the national hub of white‑water adventure in Wales, situated just outside Bala in the heart of Snowdonia National Park. Established in 1986, the centre pioneered commercial white‑water rafting in the UK and remains the country’s most popular venue for rafting, canyoning, and kayaking. The river itself, the Tryweryn, rises from Llyn Celyn and benefits from a controlled dam that releases a steady flow of 9‑12 m³/s during summer, creating ideal conditions for Grade III rapids and exhilarating play‑holes. The centre’s three segments – the Top Site, Centre Section and Lower Tryweryn – offer a range of graded runs from Grade II to Grade IV, with features such as the “Top‑Hole”, “Fingers”, “Café Wave” and the scenic Bala Mill Falls. Beyond the river, visitors can enjoy a range of support services: a fully equipped kayak shop on site, a Riverside Café, and coaching programmes for all levels. The centre also hosts rescue training, freestyle competitions and a variety of adventure courses, making it an excellent destination for both adrenaline seekers and families. With its dam‑controlled flow, varied river sections and all‑season support infrastructure, Canolfan Tryweryn stands as a top choice for a day of high‑octane fun in the Welsh countryside.
