Walking Tours - Association of Voluntary Guides
About
The Association of Voluntary Guides to the City of York (AVG) offers the city’s longest‑standing free walking tours, open every day except Christmas. Since 1951, more than 80 local volunteers have led daily two‑hour guided walks around York’s historic heart, sharing the stories behind the city walls, the medieval streets, and famous landmarks such as York Minster and the Shambles. Tour times run at 10:30 am and 1:15 pm, with a comfortable two‑hour pace that allows visitors to absorb history without feeling rushed. The tours are entirely free – no ticket fee or tip is required – and are ideal for families, couples, and solo travelers seeking an in‑depth, culturally rich exploration of York's heritage. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a short‑statured visitor, or simply someone who loves a good story, the AVG guides bring the city to life with humor, detail, and warmth. The route covers historic sites such as the Multangular Tower, Museum Gardens, St. Mary’s Abbey, King’s Manor, Bootham Bar, the Bar Walls, Monk Bar, Treasurer’s House, St. William’s College, Holy Trinity Goodramgate, and the famous Shambles. Groups are limited to 25 people per tour, and pre‑booking is highly recommended to secure a spot, especially during peak season. With a focus on an inclusive, engaging experience, the AVG’s tours are a highlight of any visit to York, offering a free, expertly led adventure through the city’s most treasured heritage.
