York City Walls
About
The York City Walls, a UNESCO‑listed series of fortifications, encircle one of England’s most historic cities. Originating in Roman times and expanded during the Middle Ages, the walls stretch just over 3.5 km, offering panoramic views of York Cathedral, the River Ouse and the Shambles. Visitors can stroll the entire circuit, passing four grand gatehouses—Bootham, Walmgate, Micklegate and Monk Bar—each the imposing entrance to the ancient city. Other highlights include the distinctive Multangular Tower in the Museum Gardens and the elegant East Angle Tower near Merchant Taylors’ Hall. The walk is free of charge, but guided tours and audio guides can be booked in advance. The walls also host a series of wall trails with interpretive panels, making it an ideal outing for history buffs, families and walkers alike.
