York Cold War Bunker
About
York Cold War Bunker is a preserved Cold War era bunker located on Monument Close in York, North Yorkshire. The two‑storey, semi‑subterranean facility opened in 2006 after extensive restoration and offers visitors a rare glimpse into the UK’s civil‑defence network during the height of the Cold War. Guided tours run hourly from 10am to 6pm, Wednesday through Sunday, allowing visitors to explore the control room, dormitory, comms rooms and air‑filtering system that could support staff for up to 30 days. The bunker was once the regional headquarters for the Royal Observer Corps’ No. 20 Group, monitoring potential nuclear attacks and fallout across Yorkshire. Today it serves as an engaging educational exhibit, featuring original monitoring equipment and detailed displays on how the crew would detect and record nuclear blasts. The site is open by guided tour only and requires pre‑booking to secure a visit slot. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a science lover, or simply curious about life on the front lines of the Cold War, the York Cold War Bunker offers an unforgettable, tangible experience of a unique chapter in Britain’s heritage.
