Grossglockner High Alpine Road
About
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road, stretching 48 kilometres from Fusch in the Salzkammergut to Heiligenblut in Carinthia, is one of Austria’s most iconic scenic drives. The route snakes through the Hohe Tauern National Park, offering panoramic vistas of the Grossglockner, the country’s highest peak, the Pasterze Glacier, and over 30 three‑thousand‑metre summits. Along the way, drivers experience shifting vegetation zones—from montane to subalpine to glacial—and discover a wealth of natural wonders, including rare alpine flora, marmots, golden eagles and alpine ibex. Visitors can also explore themed exhibition stops, hiking paths, and interactive experiences such as the “High Five” wildlife showcase. Open from early May until early November, the road is closed for winter travel from early May 2026. The official visitor centre and ticketing office are located in Rainerstraße 2, 5020 Salzburg, Austria. With its dramatic roaring waterfalls, crystal‑clear lakes, and the majestic Grossglockner skyline, the highway offers a quintessential alpine adventure that appeals to families, nature enthusiasts, and road‑trip lovers alike.
