Schafbergbahn
About
The SchafbergBahn is Austria’s steepest rack railway, climbing 1,783 m above the valley floor in just 35 minutes. Departing from the picturesque town of St. Wolfgang, the cogwheel train offers uninterrupted views of the glistening Wolfgangsee and the surrounding Alps. At the summit visitors can wander through the historic Himmelspforte refuge, explore the nearby Hotel Schafbergspitze, and enjoy 360° panoramic vistas of the lake and mountains. Below, the ErlebnisQuartier at the base station showcases the railway’s history with a museum, souvenir shop, and a café terrace overlooking the valley. During the autumn and winter season the SchafbergBahn operates from 21 November to 21 December, with services running each 20‑to‑30 minutes between 10:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online in advance; reservations are not required for the mountain ride but are recommended for groups of more than twenty people.
