Royal Theatre Toone
About
The Royal Theatre Toone is Brussels' only surviving traditional puppet theatre, keeping alive the legacy of the famed "poechenellekelder". Set in the historic Îlot Sacré at 66 Rue du Marché aux Herbes, the theatre welcomes audiences into a 17th‑century vaulted hall where seasoned puppet masters perform classics—from Shakespeare to local folklore—in a vibrant blend of Brussels dialect and several languages. Between shows, visitors can enjoy local brews in the Estaminet Bar de Toone, a centuries‑old tavern serving traditional Belgian beers and a historic mead. With performances every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night (and an afternoon performance on Saturdays), the Royal Theatre Toone offers an engaging cultural experience that combines theatre, history and culinary delights. The adjoining museum, free to the public during show hours, showcases a collection of puppets and artifacts, making the venue a true living museum of Brussels' puppet heritage.
