Mintmaster’s Cellar
About
A lesson on the history of minting is presented in a cellar. The area under Dominikánské náměstí (Dominican Square) is now the home of an exhibition of the Mint Master’s Cellar and the reconstructed cellars of Nová radnice (the New Town Hall). The exhibition shows the nearly forgotten craft of mintage in Brno and Moravia, and it illustrates how the square above, once Rybný trh (the Fish Market), also called Forum Piscium, has developed over the centuries since the Middle Ages. It also shows the history of the Gothic Královská kaple (Royal Chapel) that was located in the lower part of the square until the beginning of the 20th century. The cellars are located under the New Town Hall, a current seat of the municipal government, and the exhibition features an audiovisual presentation of the history and presence of the statutory city of Brno. And from time to time, experienced mint masters have been known to show off their artistic skills here.
