Changing of her Majesty's guard at Amalienborg Castle
About
Amalienborg Castle, the official residence of the Danish royal family, sits at the heart of Copenhagen’s historic centre. The four Rococo palaces that form the complex are surrounded by a graceful octagonal courtyard, the Amalienborg Slotsplads, and are crowned by an equestrian statue of King Frederik V. Every day at noon, the world’s most colourful and disciplined guard‑change ceremony takes place here. Royal Life Guards in scarlet uniforms and bearskins march from Rosenborg Castle to the palace, exchange the guards in front of the statue and light a new torch. The ceremony is free to the public and attracts visitors from all over the globe. Periodically, the Christian VII and VIII palaces open for guided tours, offering glimpses of lavish interiors and royal artefacts. The surrounding area, including the marble‑clad Klostergården (Marble Church) and the lush Amaliehaven gardens, makes the site an ideal cultural stop in Copenhagen.
