Bunkermuseum Hanstholm
About
Bunkermuseum Hanstholm is Denmark’s largest WWII bunker complex located on the rugged North Jutland coast. Visitors enter the enormous underground stronghold that once housed 90 German troops and a 38 cm coastal gun, now restored to its original layout and open to the public. Inside the bunker, guided tours reveal the command centre, ammunition storage, and original artillery emplacements, providing a vivid glimpse of wartime life. Adjacent to the underground site is a sprawling 220,000 m² outdoor exhibition area featuring restored bunkers, a model train system, and interactive displays that reconstruct Norway’s coastal defence. The museum also offers a short, full‑size “ammunition train” ride – a nostalgic journey through the bunker’s 4.3 km narrow‑gauge railway, which operates between 10:00 and 15:30 with additional services in summer. Admission is free for children under 18, with discounted rates for students, pensioners and wheelchair users. The complex is set against the spectacular backdrop of the North Sea and the National Park Thy, making it a must‑visit destination for history enthusiasts, families, and train‑lover travelers.
