About

The Australian National Memorial in Villers‑Bretonneux is a solemn tribute to the more than 10,000 Australian soldiers who fought on the French front during the First World War and whose graves are unknown. Designed by the famous British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1938, the memorial features a striking tower and surrounding walls that bear the engraved names of each missing soldier, together with a Bronze Cross of Sacrifice and bilingual inscriptions in English and French. Adjacent to the memorial lies the Sir John Monash Centre, an interpretive hub that further illuminates Australia’s WWI experience.
