La Grande Saline De Salins-les-bains
About
The Grande Saline de Salins‑les‑Bains is a living museum of salt production, where visitors can walk through its 12‑meter‑deep, 165‑metre‑long underground gallery and witness a 19th‑century bucket wheel still in operation. After the guided walk, guests can explore the surface museum and evaporation ponds that showcase the cobalt‑blue brine‑pumped by the river Furieuse. The site’s industrial heritage is complemented by interactive displays, soundscapes and a small cinema playing archival footage of saltworkers. Opening hours vary seasonally, with guided tours offered midday to early evening, while the gallery itself is only accessible with a guide. Family-friendly, historic and industrial appeal make it a must‑visit on any itinerary to the Franche‑Comté. A typical visit lasts about 90 minutes to two hours. The guided tour lasts roughly an hour, followed by free exploration of the museum and evaporation building. The saltworks open daily, offering guided tours throughout the year: 10‑am to 12‑pm and 2‑pm to 5:30‑pm for most of the year, extending to 7‑pm in July and August.
