Chateau de Fougeres
About
The Château de Fougeres is a monumental medieval fortress that stands as one of the finest examples of fortified architecture in Europe. Located in the historic town of Fougeres in Brittany, the castle dominates the skyline with its 13 imposing towers and a vast stone keep that once withstood sieges and quarrels of centuries. Visitors can wander through the labyrinthine courtyards, climb the great towers, and experience the richly preserved interiors that showcase the evolution of fortification from the 11th to the 19th century. With an all-day ticket that includes a free audio guide, guests are encouraged to explore the castle at their own pace while enjoying guided tours available for free at no extra cost. The castle also hosts the La Coursive, an adjacent entertainment venue featuring seasonal exhibitions and cultural events. The castle remains open nearly year‑round except for a brief closure each winter to carry out maintenance and conservation work. Opening hours are from 10 am to 7 pm from May through September, and from 10 am to 12:30 pm and 2 pm–5:30 pm from October to April. Admission is free for children under six and discounted tickets are available for seniors, disabled visitors, and students. The site’s rich history, combined with its spectacular architecture and hands‑on visitor experience, makes the Château de Fougeres a must‑visit landmark for history lovers, families, and cultural enthusiasts alike.
