Grotte Prehistorique des Merveilles
About
The Grotte Prehistorique des Merveilles is a spectacular natural cave located on the plateau of Rocamadour, overlooking the Alzou canyon. Visitors can explore well-preserved prehistoric paintings dating back over 25,000 years, intricate stalactite and stalagmite formations, and unique mineral deposits that formed during the Jurassic period. Guided tours run three times a day—at 11:00, 14:15, and 15:15—with a 45‑minute duration, offering an immersive dive into geological and cultural history. The cave is open from Easter through the end of September, except on Fridays when it remains closed for conservation. Each tour is conducted in French, with an optional English tour available by reservation. The cave’s constant temperature of 13 °C invites visitors to dress comfortably, while a shaded park area and a souvenir shop provide additional amenities. The site’s accessibility is limited; only a 20‑step staircase leads to the entrance, and wheelchairs are not accommodated. However, the experience offers a unique glimpse into the earth’s ancient past, making it a must‑visit destination for history enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
