About
Essex Farm Cemetery, located near Ypres in West Flanders, Belgium, is a World War I burial ground established in 1915. Designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield, the cemetery covers 6,032 sqm and contains 1,204 graves, including 104 unidentified soldiers. It sits within the John McCrae Memorial Site, between the Diksmuidseweg (N369) and the Ypres Canal, and is the place where Lieutenant‑Colonel John McCrae penned the famous poem “In Flanders Fields”. The grounds are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and offer visitors a solemn, historically significant setting that blends memorial architecture with poignant story‑telling.
