Known as La Ville Blanche (the White City) the light limestone facades of La Rochelle glow in the light of the sun. The focus of the town is the old harbour, very picturesque with its two monumental towers (St Nicolas Tower and the Tower of the Chain) either side of the port entrance. A third tower, the 'Tower of the Lantern' is connected to the Chain Tower by a section of the ramparts that originally defended the town. The old town, just behind the harbour, is extensive and also very well preserved dating mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries. The main shopping streets especially have many fine buildings, but you will also need to explore the side streets in this part of the town. The town has an impressive unified appearance, with arcaded streets, houses constructed in the local light stone, and light grey shutters. Boutiques now occupy the ground floor of many of the buildings. Les Minimes was built on reclaimed land, and now is the largest marinas in Europe. Aytré: lovely little town with all the local facilities. Chatelaillon-Plage: When you arrive in Châtelaillon-Plage you have no doubt about what attracts the visitors - it is very much a typical modern seaside village, developed along the beach. The beach itself is the longest in the region, at almost three kilometres long, and sandy and popular. A stretch of about 200 metres of beach is also supervised for your safety. The rest of the resort contains all the ingredients you would expect: a casino, a spa treatment centre, a racetrack, mini-golf, various beach ensure you make the most of your visit. *********** Take a boat from la Rochelle or Fouras alternatively you can drive to some of the beautiful islands in the area. l'ile de Re l'ile Madame l'ile d'Aix l'ile d'Oleron Day out by car: Rochefort: 30 minutes - Rochefort was a strategic location from the 17th century and Louis XIV built in the city "the most beautiful and largest Arsenal" of his kingdom by the Charente river. Within the naval yard there are museums and the 'Royal Rope' where rope was made for the French fleet. Rochefort was instrumental in the maritime destiny of France. Threats of invasions gave birth to a whole system of fortifications including Fort Boyard, Fort Vauban, Fort Enet, Fort Lupin, Fort Liédot in the area. Marennes: 45 minutes - Marennes is a lovely town with a 12th century church, famous for its fine Oysters and speciality of mussels, fish and seafood Saintes: 45 minutes - Saintes is a Gallo-Roman city, City of Art and History, a mosaic of landscapes, monuments and gastronomy and there is a great deal to enjoy when visiting this lively town. Because of its gallo-roman
