Citadelle du Chateau d'Oleron
About
The Citadel of Château‑d’Oleron, located on the Île d’Oléron in Charente‑Maritime, is a fortress steeped in French history, built between 1630 and 1704 under the auspices of Cardinal Richelieu and later refined by the famed military engineer Vauban. Over the centuries it has served as a military garrison, a prison during the Revolution and 1870, and a strategic point for soldiers heading to New France. Today it welcomes visitors with a rich tapestry of Bastions, the Royal Gate, and the Arsenal—now a museum space showcasing artillery, ceremonial regiments, and the history of French North America. A walk through the citadel offers an immersive experience that combines architecture, maritime defense, and the story of French colonial expansion. The monument is managed by the local tourist office and is recognized as an official historic monument since 1929.
