La Corderie Royale a l'Arsenal de Rochefort
About
Situated in the historic town of Rochefort, La Corderie Royale (Royal Rope Manufacture) invites visitors into a living museum that tells the story of France’s maritime heritage. The 374‑metre‑long, 8‑metre‑wide building, originally built in 1666 for the production of rope for the Royal Navy, now houses a permanent exhibition that takes guests through every stage of the rope‑making process—from the cultivation of hemp to the creaking bracing of the ropes that once secured ships. Complementing the core gallery, a rotating temporary exhibition, lively workshops where students can learn to tie 3,800 traditional knots, and the surrounding gardens and arsenal offer a dynamic, multisensory experience for history buffs, families, and sailing enthusiasts. From the moment you pass through the vaulted entrance, you’ll be immersed in the sights, sounds, and scents of a seafaring world that has fascinated observers for centuries.
