Citadelle de Sisteron
About
The Citadelle de Sisteron, perched on a cliff overlooking the Durance valley, stands as one of Provence’s most imposing medieval fortresses. Its origins trace back to 1209, when the Counts of Provence erected a citadel to defend the region, and it has since withstood wars, sieges, and even modern warfare. Designed by the renowned military engineer Vauban in the late 17th century, the citadel’s layered ramparts and the iconic powder magazine showcase the evolution of fortification architecture over eight centuries. Visitors are treated to sweeping panoramic views across 150 km of the Haute Provence countryside, a breathtaking experience amplified by the archaeological depth and historic ambiance that permeates the stone walls, underground passage, and towering donjon. The site also hosts cultural programs, guided evening tours, and the annual European Heritage Day, during which the citadel opens its gates for free.
