Chateau Fort of Lourdes
About
The Château fort de Lourdes, a magnificent stone fortress perched on a rocky spur above the town, invites visitors on a journey through a millennium of history. Once a stronghold, a royal prison, and now a museum, it houses the Musée pyrénéen, which showcases ethnic and artistic treasures chronicling the Pyrenean people from the 19th to the 20th century. Guests stroll through recreated interior scenes of a Béarnaise kitchen and a Bigorre bedroom, and the museum’s exhibition features textiles, jewellery, and everyday objects that paint a vivid portrait of mountain life. In addition to the exhibitions, the grounds offer a lush botanical garden, soothing sculptures, and panoramic vistas of Lourdes, the Sanctuary, and the surrounding mountains. Visitors can explore the chapel of Notre‑Dame du Château, the historic donjon, the iconic ramp of the English, and the external ramparts that once guarded strategic routes to Spain. Open daily from 10:00 to 12:00 and again from 14:00 to 17:00 (closed on Mondays), the site welcomes groups, families, historians, and solo travelers alike, with admission ranging from €8 for adults to free for children under six. Guided tours are available for €9, and annual passes run from €14 for individuals to €28 for families. The ferrying of a cathedral‑style ambience, a taut blend of medieval architecture and mountain heritage, makes the castle and its collections an unmissable stop for anyone strolling the Pyrenees.
