Château de Najac, a majestic medieval fortress perched atop a hill in the village of Najac, Aveyron, is one of France’s most well‑preserved castles. Originally founded in 1253 on the orders of Alphonse de Poitiers, the structure evolved from a simple square tower into a sprawling complex with round keeps, towers on each corner, and an ornate barbican that once guarded the main gate. Today, the castle offers visitors a unique journey through time: from the high‑altitude donjon that crowns the hill to the hidden corridor that links the Romanesque tower to the chapel of the keep, each corner tells a story of medieval defence and royal ambition. The Cibiel family, who acquired the estate in the 19th century after a period of disrepair, restored the castle and opened it to the public. Visitors can wander through the inner bailey, explore the guardhouses, and climb the walkway around the panoramic terrace for breathtaking views of the Aveyron River.
