Fuggerei
About
The Fuggerei, founded in 1521, is the world’s oldest continuously inhabited social housing settlement. Nestled in the historic center of Augsburg, the complex is home to around 150 modest, rent‑free families who live in 67 original timber‑frame houses and a small church. Visitors can explore the four dedicated museums—Story of the Fuggerei, Residents, Everyday Life, and the Wartime Bunker—each telling parts of the 500‑year legacy of this unique philanthropic experiment. Guided tours, both public and bespoke, offer intimate insights into the architecture, daily life, and the enduring generosity that keeps the community alive today. Whether you’re a history buff, a cultural enthusiast, or simply curious about innovative social housing, the Fuggerei provides a rare, living window into one of Europe’s most remarkable social experiments. "Fuggerei remains a testament to the visionary ideas of the Fugger family and the enduring spirit of communal support," says the City of Augsburg’s official guidebook.
