About
The Neue Wache, situated on Unter den Linden in Berlin’s historic Mitte district, is a striking neoclassical monument that has served as a guardhouse, a war memorial, and today the Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for victims of war and tyranny. Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the building’s austere façade is punctuated by a series of heroic statues and an eternal flame. Inside the sparse, top‑lit hall stands Käthe Kollwitz’s monumental sculpture ‘Mother with her Dead Son’, a powerful reminder of civilian suffering during the world wars. A brief tour typically takes about an hour and offers visitors a moving reflection on Germany’s turbulent history.
