About

Tierpark Berlin is a sprawling green oasis located in the Lichtenberg district of Berlin, covering 160 hectares (about 400 acres). First opened in 1955 as a companion to the Berlin Zoological Garden, it was built on the former park of Friedrichsfelde Palace, and today it is the city’s largest animal park and one of Europe’s most visited zoos. The zoo’s rich history mirrors Germany’s turbulent 20th‑century story. It opened as an East‑Berlin institution during the Cold War, offering a vital cultural escape for residents of the former eastern sector. Over the decades, it expanded from a modest collection of bears and monkeys to a diverse range of more than 7,250 animals representing 846 species. Notable milestones include the completion of a dedicated African and Asian elephant building in the early 1970s and the recent inauguration of the popular African Savannah exhibit in 2023, which features giraffes, zebras and other iconic species. Today visitors can wander through themed habitats that showcase everything from African savannah to Arctic terraria, and interactive displays such as the free‑entry Bear Show Window allow guests up close with American black bears and other large carnivores. The park’s layout encourages leisurely strolls among lush trees, winding canals and historically significant buildings, making it a favorite destination for families, photography enthusiasts, and animal lovers alike. Whether you’re researching the zoo’s wildlife conservation projects or planning a day out, Tierpark Berlin offers an accessible, immersive experience that brings the wonder of the natural world to the heart of Germany’s capital.
