About

Situated in the heart of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, the Loreley is a towering 132‑metre slate cliff that crowns the Rhine’s right bank in Sankt Goarshausen, Germany. Its dramatic rock face has inspired generations of artists, poets, and composers, most famously Heinrich Heine’s poem "Die Lorelei," which cemented the legend of the siren who lures ships to their ruin. In 2005 the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its cultural and natural significance and its emblematic role in German Romantic literature. At the summit of the rock stands the Loreley Amphitheatre, dating from the 1930s, which hosts cultural events and provides a unique setting to experience the myth in a literal sense. Visitors can walk the trails along the gorge, enjoy the panoramic vistas of the Rhine, the surrounding vineyards, and the medieval town beneath, and observe the rock’s unique geological features up close. The Loreley is accessible to all visitors, with paved paths and signage in multiple languages. While there is a small visitor fee for the amphitheatre exhibitions, the general viewing area is free, making it an affordable day‑out for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.
