Forggensee
About
Forggensee, also known as the Roßhaupten Reservoir, is a sprawling lake situated north of Füssen in Bavaria's picturesque Ostallgäu region. The 15.2 km² body of water was created in the 1950s as part of a hydroelectric project and quickly became a favorite spot for water sports and leisure. Surrounded by the majestic Alps, the lake offers stunning views of the nearby Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, making it a scenic backdrop for both photographers and casual visitors. Beyond its scenic beauty, Forggensee is a vibrant hub for surfing, sailing, fishing and boating. Anglers can target pike, trout and eel, while windsurfing enthusiasts enjoy the lake’s consistent breezes. The well-developed visitor infrastructure includes boat rentals, playgrounds, and walking trails around the shoreline, catering to families, couples and solo travelers alike. With a spacious shoreline and easy access from major roads, the lake is an ideal day‑trip destination from Füssen, Rothenburg and Munich. It also hosts seasonal festivals and sporting events that attract international crowds, adding to the lively atmosphere of the area.
