Holstentor
About
The Holstentor – a magnificent brick‑gothic city gate – stands proudly on Holstentorplatz in the heart of Lübeck, Germany. As one of only two surviving gates of the medieval city wall, it has become a symbol of Lübeck’s Hanseatic heritage and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Today the Holstentor houses a museum that chronicles the city’s trading prowess, showcasing ship models, armors, legal instruments, and interactive displays that illuminate the Golden Age of the Hanseatic League. Visitors can wander through the stone‑laden halls, climb the narrow spiral staircases to the towers, and peruse the extensive exhibits that weave together Lübeck’s history, culture, and maritime legacy. The museum’s friendly staff also offers guided tours – available in both German and English – which deepen appreciation for the gate’s architectural and historical significance.
