Sendlinger Tor
About
Sendlinger Tor is one of Munich’s three surviving medieval city gates and a defining landmark of the historic Old Town. Built in the 14th century as part of Ludwig the Bavarian’s fortification, the gate’s stone arches and flanking towers have survived wars and urban renewal, offering visitors a tangible glimpse of Gothic architecture. At the heart of the city, the gate opens onto the bustling Sendlinger Straße, a pedestrian thoroughfare lined with shops, cafés and cultural venues, making it an ideal point from which to explore Munich’s center. Its picturesque setting and historical significance have made Sendlinger Tor a favorite photo‑op for travelers and a convenient entry point for tours of Marienplatz, the Viktualienmarkt and the neighboring historic buildings.
