Viktualienmarkt
About
The Viktualienmarkt is Munich’s iconic open‑air market, situated in the historic city centre between the Old Town Hall and the historic St. Peter’s Church. Since 1807 it has evolved from a humble farmers’ market into a bustling hub for gourmets, offering a vibrant mix of fresh produce, artisan cheeses, smoked meats, pastries, beer gardens and a range of specialty shops. Visitors can stroll through more than 140 stalls, sampling Bavarian delicacies such as Weißwurst, fresh fruits, chocolates and specialty coffees while watching street performers and socialising in the lively beer garden. The market’s central square is framed by iconic fountains depicting local folk‐singers and comedians, and a colourful Maypole that stands as a barometer of Munich’s cultural spirit.
