Weltenburg Abbey
About
Welcome to Weltenburg Abbey (Kloster Weltenburg), a stunning Benedictine monastery perched on a picturesque peninsula of the Danube River in the Franconian Jura, just 5 km southwest of Kelheim. The abbey’s Baroque church, dated to 1716–1739, is a masterpiece of Asam architecture, featuring soaring frescoes, a magnificent altar, and an iconic dome that dominates the skyline. Visitors can walk freely through the historic cloister, admire the ancient brewery—believed to be the world’s oldest monastic brewery since 1050—and taste traditional Bavarian beer and cuisine in the abbey’s spacious open‑air beer garden. Beyond the spiritual and architectural marvels, the monastery hosts concerts, guided tours, and a small museum showcasing its rich history. Admission to the abbey costs €25 for adults, €10 for students and children, and €20 for people with disabilities, and visitors are encouraged to contact the abbey’s front office at 09441 67570 or via email for ticket reservations. The monastery welcomes visitors Monday through Sunday from 08:00 to 18:00, offering a memorable experience of medieval heritage, baroque artistry, and Bavarian hospitality.
